~10 am

The campaign began with the characters meeting for breakfast at the Feral Dog (see attachment #1), a local tavern of ill-repute.  They had all shared a meal there the night before and, no doubt due to the terrible food, each suffered an ominous fever dream brought on by indigestion. Despite this, they met there once again for the main reason that the Feral Dog was the cheapest tavern in town (and funds were tight for our heroes).

Their breakfast conversation drifted from topic to topic before settling on the subject of a trio of adventurers from the City of Greyhawk (see attachment #2) who had recently arrived in town. These three adventurers had spoken openly of their plans to explore a local cairn, called the "Stirgenest Cairn", where they expected to find ancient treasures and magical artifacts. All the locals, of course, knew that the Stirgenest Cairn was a long abandoned cairn which was often explored by Diamond Lake's youth - who have always found it to be completely empty of marvels and perfectly harmless. None-the-less, the idea of striking it rich while exploring an ancient cairn fired the imaginations of our would-be heroes; life in Diamond Lake was far from ideal and each wished to achieve fame and fortune.

The hills around Diamond Lake, aptly named the "Cairn Hills", held many old ruins; one in particular was both close and possessing of some small notoriety. Long forgotten, this "Whispering Cairn" had been rediscovered almost a decade ago by a curious teenager and soon it was a sort of community secret held by Diamond Lake's youth, who would dare each other to disappear into it's yawning entrance and spend the night as a test of bravery. These visits tapered off about six years prior, when a local girl vanished while sleeping in the cairn.  After a brief discussion, the characters decided to explore this site, the "Whispering Cairn".

~11 am

After finishing their meal, the party gathered their gear and set out to the north east, skirting the northern edge of Diamond Lake (the lake itself, not the town).  After roughly an hour they encountered the ruins of an old building and stopped to investigate.

Quote
THE YARD
A modest dwelling squats upon the crown of a small hill.  While the rough stone walls of the first floor look mostly intact, the second floor has completely collapsed. A half height wall rings the house, but it too is in a state of severe disrepair.  Rubble and dense weeds choke the yard.

THE BUILDING

Made of smooth stone blocks, this building stands in shambles. Thick vines creep up the side and most of the windows are broken.
The front door hangs open, barely on its hinges, under a sagging and partially collapsed porch.

THE INTERIOR

Small mounds of debris litter the floor of the building's interior. Loose stones, dead weeds, and grime cover virtually every surface.
Paintings must have once adorned the place as indicated by the particular stain patterns marring the walls. The only light comes from thin shafts sneaking in from outside, illuminating clouds of dust dancing through the stale air.

(refer to attachment #3 for a full map of the building)

After spending roughly a half hour investigating the building, the party traveled another 10 minutes before arriving at their destination, the Whispering Cairn (see attachment #4).

The party's first impression of the Whispering Cairn:

Quote
Natural light dimly illuminates a long hallway extending north into darkness. A faint breeze brings with it sibilant whispers that sound almost like sighing breath. It must be a trick of the wind, but the effect is almost lifelike.

The walls bear horizontal bands or deceptively simple geometric patterns at waist level. In places the bands reveal startling detail, but in others the walls look as though they have been hacked apart with weapons or eroded by the rigors of time. Flakes of ancient paint, brilliant purple and a dull mustard hue, still cling to the walls in places, hinting at what must once have been a riot of color. A thin coat of dust coats the floor.

Just Inside the darkened tomb, the hallway branches into shallow alcoves to the east and west. Here the walls bear the most significant damage. Dozens or clumsy etchings mar the beautiful ancient masonry like graffiti on a city wall. A clump or soiled cloth about the size of a halfling rests in the rounded terminus of the western alcove.

Outside, the wind picks up, and a chorus of almost human sounds rises from the darkened hall.
