Character investment will pay off.
« on: December 21, 2009, 06:11:49 pm »
OK  here are some of the new character creation rules and other FYI's for the upcoming messentia campaign
No more than 50 points in disadvantages/quirks. I am going to follow Eric's lead in the way giving out points at the end of a session. Also anything posted in the forum that is insightful, useful, a good idea and so on will be possibly awarded CP's for the effort. So histories is the best way to start.

Cool.  And, I'd already started making a character with 75 points in disadvantages but I don't mind starting over.  When it comes to disadvantages, it's hard not to take the maximum.... and with a bunch of characters taking 75 points each it's easy for a band to become quite disfunctional; everyone seems to take mental and social disadvantages but hardly anyone takes physical ones...

I'm considering Low Pain Threshold and Post-Combat Shakes.

Sounds good to me.  75 is always hard to swing, so what I am really having difficulty remembering is what everyone is doing character-wise? Kat is an Assassin- any ranged weapons?, Maegan is her Nordheimer(melee), I am a melee giant and thinking of taking ranged skills but deciding between bow and javelin depending on others, Eric- was it you who was the Shemite spell caster? I don't remember anyone else so weigh in so I can make some choices! Thanks

Yep, I plan to be a shemite sorcerer.

I'm trying to decide right now if I want just one entire college of magic at skill levels of about 20 or about 60 spells at skill 15 and 2 or 3 at 20.  Back when we had a 75 point disadvantage limit I considered taking a 19 intelligence and then lowering the will to 16 and perception to 12 - that would have cost me 180 points but with 50 points in disadvantages (in reduced secondary characteristics).   That concept is still viable, but I'd only have 35 points left after taking magical aptitude of +3, which really would limit my spell selection.  Especially if I wanted to have any other features besides spells.

Still, I do think that the 50 point limit will be better; I can certainly make a decent mage with an IQ of 14 and the end result will still be quite functional.  Right now I'm thinking IQ 14 plus Magical Aptitude +3 (115 total points) will leave me with 135 points (after I take 50 points in disadvantages.  I could still push 3 spells up to skill 20 (say, one offensive, one defensive, and one utility spell) for 48 points... and take maybe 50 other spells as skill 15.  That would leave me 37 points for non-spell skills and advantages.

I'm leaning heavily towards spells of Communication & Empathy, Mind Control, and Knowledge.

Alright sounds like you are basically a spell caster and very specialized in magic, leaving the ways of common weapons behind you.  So now we for sure have a Sorcerer, 2 warriors, and the others I need more information about.  Kat specifically-do you have ranged capabilities? Everyone else file in too...

Yeah, yeah, yeah.  IF  my husband EVER let me use the computer.  Sheesh!

My character can dance around the most skilled swordsman with her Zingaran Smallsword.  She's still learning to use the bow, but is confident with the poisened darts in her blowpipe.  Otherwise if you need some quick, quiet, bloody work done, or a few extra jewels in your pocket, she's the woman to see.  Don't get to close though, her kiss is deadly...

It's probably a little late for my response, but I'll try anyway. Mekrimun's sword is clean of blood. He does have ranged attacks but, at silly penalties. Over all, Mekrimun would like nothing more than to obliterate people with sorcery.
